About this Building
The Chuck Roast Venture Center is a re-use of the former factory where Chuck Roast Outdoor Clothing and Equipment was manufactured for 39 years. In the early 70's we began making gaiters and daypacks and at one time were the largest supplier of packs to both L.L. Bean and EMS. In fact, L.L. Bean had never sold a nylon daypack until they tried a Chuck Roast pack in their retail store, likely starting with an order of 24 pieces.
Chuck Roast faced the challenge of the pack business going to China, and saw the glint of a market for jackets from synthetic pile. This began a new wave of growth and our products became well known in sailing circles. Our jackets and vests were worn by three winning America's Cup crews in a row.
Chuck Roast was the second company to start making clothing from a new fabric from Malden Mills, in Lawrence Massachusetts, called Polarfleece. Polarfleece clothing and then the improved quality Polartec™ became the mainstay of Chuck Roast products for the next twenty years.
We were known for our beautiful Polartec prints and our products were at one time sold by leading retailers in Switzerland, Italy, France, Germany, Japan, and the United Kingdom. The force of global competition from countries paying wages as low as 11 cents an hour, coupled with a trade deal that eliminated duties on products sewn in Jordan, led to the company's decline in 2008.
The building has come back to Life!
In addition to the Chuck Roast Venture Center, on the other end of the building is Little Hands Big Dreams Childcare Center which has recently doubled in size. These kids have fun and are always learning.
